Commemorating Tarawa

Camp Lejeune will commemorate the 65th anniversary of the battle of Tarawa with a ceremony and weapons display.

Marines from the 2nd Marine Regiment will hold a commemoration
ceremony Thursday. Events include a chapel ceremony, a non-lethal weapons demonstration and a small-arms shoot for veterans and their
families.

The Battle of Tarawa was fought from Nov. 20-23, 1943. It was the first offensive in the central Pacific region. The U.S. victory provided air bases so bombers could reach the Philippines and Japan.

The Battle of Tarawa was a battle in the Pacific Theatre of World War II, largely fought from November 20 to November 23, 1943. It was the second time the United States was on the offensive (the Battle of Guadalcanal had been the first), and the first offensive in the critical central Pacific region. It would be ashame if no one else comments, so Marines died there.
