Swimming Advisories Issued For Three Sites in Carteret County

One ocean-side and two sound-side advisories were issued Tuesday at three sites in Carteret County, where state officials found bacteria levels in the water that exceed the state and Environmental Protection Agency's recreational water quality standards.

Two of the advisories affect areas in Beaufort: one at the Radio Island Public Access and another on the north side of the mouth of Town Creek. The third advisory is in Salter Path at the public beach access just west of mile marker 10 off N.C. 58.

People swimming or playing in waters with bacteria levels higher than the standards have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness or skin infections.

Swimming advisories are recommendations that people have no full body contact with the water in a specific area for public health reasons. These advisories are not a beach closing, nor do they affect the entire Carteret County area. Swimming advisories affect water within 200 feet of the sign.

State officials will continue testing the site, and they will remove the sign and notify the public again when the bacteria levels decrease to levels below the standards.

As long as the state allows the building of beachfront rental properties with eight and nine bedrooms that are occupied by twenty or twent-five people during the summer these problems will become more severe. All of these properties use septic tanks and there is a limit to how much raw sewage the sand can absorb before bacteria begins to leach into the ocean. If you want proof, look at Malibu, California. People no longer swim in the surf there because of high infection rates caused by sewage contamination.
