Wright Brothers Memorial Hosts Launch Viewing

The birthplace of powered flight is hosting a special event to mark the final space shuttle launch.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is holding a special program featuring Friday's scheduled launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis. The program is hosted by the National Park Service at the site in Kill Devil Hills, and is free with paid admission.

Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. with a talk and videos on the history of the space shuttle program. The talk will lead up to the viewing of the scheduled launch of Atlantis. The launch itself is scheduled for 11:26 a.m., although rain in the forecast threatened to delay the launch. A lightning strike near the pad briefly caused a flurry of concern at NASA before engineers concluded the spaceship was OK.
