NEW INFO: Woman Killed In Highway 70 Accident

A woman is dead after a Wednesday evening accident on Highway 70 in Craven County, according to the Highway Patrol.

Officials say Margaret Wood of New Bern died in the crash on Highway 70near Carolina Pines. She was 80 years old.

The fatal wreck happened around 4:45 p.m. Troopers say Wood was turning onto Highway 70 from Carolina Pines Blvd. but didn't yield for a pickup truck that was headed west on Highway 70. Troopers say the truck was driven by Edward Wood of Grifton. He was taken to the hospital in New Bern, and troopers say his injuries were not life-threatening.

East Care airlifted Wood to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. She died several hours later.

    I live in Carolina Pines, and this was bound to happen. It's a very nasty intersection that has had it's troubles in the past. Trying to turn left onto hwy 70 from Caroliba Pines Blvd is a task and requires skill during rush hour.

    So sorry for the family. My grandfather was killed just about this time last year on Hwy 17 when he pulled out in front of someone. Sorry for your loss and for the individual that hit her. God Bless You all.

    Ms. Margaret was a regular where I worked. It is so sad to know we won't see her coming through those doors every afternoon. Prayers to her family. :(
