A driver hauling a truck full of mail plowed into a house and into the bedroom of a woman who was asleep inside. That woman remains hospitalized in Greenville in serious condition.
The Highway Patrol says is happened Thursday at 6:23 am on U.S. 17 north, just outside of Windsor in Bertie County.
Troopers say 29-year-old Lamantric Joyner of Tarboro ran off the road to the left and slammed in to one story home. He was driving a box truck that was contracted by the U.S. Postal Service. Troopers say the truck traveled 319 feet before it struck the home.
The Highway Patrol says Teresa Bass was asleep in her bed when the truck ran through her bedroom. The 57-year-old woman was taken to Vidant-Chowan Hospital in Edenton and then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
The driver was charged with careless and reckless driving. Troopers say there was dense fog at the time of the accident.
