Local plumbers are getting more and more calls this time of year as the temperature drops and pipes start to freeze.
At the Learning Ranch Daycare in Pitt County, an outside faucet burst overnight and was found Tuesday. Conger Plumbing in Winterville says a garden hose still connected to an outside faucet caused the problem and cost hundreds of dollars to repair. It could have been more, if it caused damage inside the facility. However, there's an easy solution to this problem.
"Always remove the outside hose from the faucet, always! You could insulate a few pipes under the house to help with the freezing issue. I wouldn't recommend any heating tape or anything, that's electrical and water and electric most of the time, don't mix," said plumber Tim Joyner.
Another easy fix, a cold weather insulation cup from your local hardware store. Representatives at Lowes say it's a hot item this cold weather season. Plus it costs less than $2.00 to protect your home from potentially thousands of dollars in repairs and damages.
