Man With Broken Bones Escapes Before Car Explodes

State troopers say a man with broken bones in his feet an ankles was able to escape his car before it exploded into flames.

Asher Turner of Williamston is recovering at Pitt County Memorial Hospital after the 1:00 a.m. crash on Highway 64 Alternate in Martin County.

The Highway Patrol says the 20-year-old man's car crashed into a bridge pylon near Shady Acres mobile Home Park between Williamston and Everetts. He managed to get out of his crumpled car and into a ditch where some good Samaritans helped him away from the accident scene before the explosion.

At last check troopers say Turner was in surgery, but is expected to be okay. They have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash.
