Widening Of US 64 Proposed

The NC DOT is looking at widening U.S. 64 from Columbia eastward to U.S. 264 near Manns Harbor. Officials say the primary purpose of this project is to reduce the U.S. 64 hurricane evacuation times, and improve overall safety and mobility along this corridor. However, homes and businesses would have to be relocated to make it happen.

NCDOT is proposing to widen existing U.S. 64 from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway and build a new four-lane bridge over the Alligator River. The 27.3-mile project starts in Columbia and ends at U.S. 264 in Dare County.

The meetings will be held on:
· Monday, April 23, Open House from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Formal Presentation at 7 p.m.
Columbia High School Auditorium

· Tuesday, April 24, Open House from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Formal Presentation at 7 p.m.

NCDOT representatives will be available at the Pre-Hearing Open Houses to answer questions and receive comments regarding the proposed projects. The opportunity to submit written comments and questions will be provided. Interested citizens may attend at any time during the above hours.
