POLICE: Well Dressed Thief Tries To Steal Cigarette Machine

Police are trying to find a man who tried to load a cigarette vending machine into the bed of a pickup truck.

Greenville police say it happened a week ago at the City Hotel & Bistro on Greenville Boulevard. Around 10:00 a.m. that morning, hotel employees noticed the well dressed man walking around the lobby and hallways for a while. During the hour, the man was seen talking on a cell phone several times and appeared to be waiting on someone.

But instead, the man retrieved a handcart from outside and tried to load the hallway vending machine into a pickup truck that he had parked near the hotel pool. An employee confronted the man, and at that point he left.

The handcart was recovered and processed for fingerprints. Police distributed photos from the hotel's surveillance cameras to area law enforcement agencies, and now are turning to the public for their help in identifying the man.

He is described as a white man, with short brown hair. He was dressed in a light colored shirt and light brown khaki pants and dark shoes. To see a larger picture of the man, click on the PHOTOS tab at the top of the story.

Anyone who can identify the man should call the Greenville Police Department at 252-329-4315, or Pitt Greenville CrimeStoppers at 252-758-7777. CrimeStoppers will pay a reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.

The biggest crime is the vending machine. I thought they were outlawed years ago because of minnors buying smokes. the true gateway drug unless you might think of soda

Doesn't anybody get information from vehicle tags any more. That would be the first thing I would check for. That way the cops can meet him at his home or work.

Well-dressed? That's business casual at best. I expected a business suit. Shows how low our criminal dress standards have become.

Well dressed is a comparative statement. Well dressed compared to what? Now, does that clear it up for ya'? At least his clothes weren't 14 sizes too large or his pants hanging off his rear end.

It's so unfair for WITN to describe the suspect's race. Or his choice of dress or his gender for that matter. That's so politically incorrect.

Politically incorrect? Hardly. This idiot tried to steal a vending machine! How is it unfair to describe a thief on the run? Jeez.... some people.

but look at nearly all of WITN's other descriptions of suspects, including those for armed robbery, and you'll see that they almost NEVER include race

If you don't believe Observer, then look at the story about the robbery at L&L Food Store on Mill Branch Road in Sharpsburg, on this web site. No discirption of the suspect is even given. So "Say wha?" looks like Observer is right and you are wrong.

This does not look like a robbery to me.
