Washington Councilman Seeks Input On Police Consolidation

Washington city councilman Doug Mercer says he continues to gather information on the pros and cons of consolidating the Washington Police Department with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Mercer tells WITN he went to the sheriff's office awhile ago to ask if such an idea would be possible and to work out the numbers and the positives and negatives. He says the idea is to save the city money.

At this time Mercer says he is still awaiting more information before making a presentation before council and says there have not been any formal discussions on the issue.

Mercer says even if council would approve such a plan, the consolidation would not happen this year.

Why is this not on the list for most commented. Could this be an attempt to bury the story?

To Beaufort Co. Ret. LE: If we were in person, I would speak slower for you so, I'll type less to help with your comprehension. I support law enforcement - both WPD & BCSO. See that little camera icon above (looks like a picture)? Click on it and you'll see more than just a few agree that Mercer and your buddy Hood should go so, I’m not sure you are correct in your assumptions about how many folks took time to voice their opinion. If you have the attention span, read ALL 3-4 pages of comments. We have a fine PD. If you knew anything about the businesses in the county, you would know how hard it is to find qualified workers under 35 who can pass a drug test and have a good work ethic. Therefore, Assistant Chief Sandy and Chief Reed have done an amazing job. There are other ways to save tax dollars. We’re already paying for the mistakes made by Wash. Electric, a city pool that can’t turn a profit and too many non emergency city workers. Take a nap.

I haven't heard that, but saw on local cable access channel that they have bought land on south side of river for a public boat ramp. Somewhere around 400K. Think that is a bit extreme when not many people are going to be able to afford gas for cars much less boats. If they have a boat they will have to sell it to buy gas for vehicles. I wonder what some people on the board have rolling around in the head? Seems ridiculous to me and many others I have spoken to in the past several months.

Has the county bought land in Chocowinity to build a new Sheirff department and jail or is it just rumor?

Why in the world would you name your child HOOD? That's too funny since he lives in a place where some of the "Elite" live. I know they are a bunch of happy neighbors.

This is exactly the way the hospital mess started. Back door wheeling/dealing, secret meetings, with the public intentionally left out and given lies. After a completely mishandled (and probably illegal) process, by one vote we almost ended up with another state taking our money for their shareholders. But, we the people, prevailed, and shocked the heck out of Hood, who thought he had a done deal. We need to stay vigilant, because this is the way the elected and appointed officials have always acted around here. It doesn't matter what the issue is, it's always happened with secrecy and back room deals. Thanks WDN for exposing this, please stay on top of them. Citizens, make your voices heard. It does work! We exposed Hood for the bully that he is, and we won't tolerate this bullying and disrespect any more. Are you listening Hood/Stan/Doug?

2 Fools Reign: Most of the comments on this blog make the citizens of Beaufort County look Ignorant. This really shows the mentality of a few people, it has been said before that the bloggers are more than likely the same couple of people, just using different identities. The citizens of Beaufort County had better thank their lucky stars that we have Law Enforcement Officers that put their lives on the line 24 hours a day seven days a week for your safety. Yet a lot of people wouldn't dare do the job themselves or better yet couldn't do the jobs that these men and women do. Surely would not risk their lives for the amount of money that they are paid. If you care too take that chance I am sure you can sign up for the next class at Beaufort Community College .. See if you can pass the class, if you do pass get a job in Law Enforcement and see how well you like it. People have no idea but yet sit back and pass judgement on people that get the job done.

Lets just get rid of Doug Mercer.... He causes more drama than he's worth. Consolidation of those 2 departments is not possible.. WPD doesnt have enough manpower now, if you consolidate his next idea is to cut manpower then you will have no where near enough manpower for the county... Lets all remember when its time to vote that MERCER AND HOOD need to be voted out. They are the root of all evil.

You get what you pay for folks and I'm not sure our public safety should be up for grabs by the cheapest bidder. The rule of the few Good Ole' Boys are at it again. Sure am glad kings Mercer and Richardson know what's best for all of us. ON ELECTION DAY, PLEASE remember the closed door, behind the curtain, out of the clear light of day approach by Mercer (and Hood) we're seeing on important public issues. They make our area look ignorant and we have a lot of wise people who should consider for the first time that it's time to step up and offer their talents. Don't just let the few with too much time on their hands to rule the city for their own gain. Ever heard of Sunshine laws Doug? Mr. Mercer's approach is foolishness. Where's the detailed analysis, where is the public input and for that matter input from other city leaders and council members? Is the Sheriff a law enforcement official or an accountant. How and by what criteria is he going to make a bid? VOTE MERCER/HOOD OUT!
