Volunteers Needed For Tornado Clean Up

Bertie County is seeking volunteers to help the clean up efforts following an outbreak of deadly tornadoes.

Those interested can fill out a volunteer registration form online. The form assists the volunteer effort with assigning volunteers to areas where there is the most need. The link is located at the bottom of this article under related links.

The Askewville Community Food Pantry continues to serve all victims of the recent tornadoes at 101 E. Askewville Street, Askewville. Victims can pick up food at this location Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 AM to 12 noon. Food donations from citizens are also accepted at this location during the same days and times.

The Askewville Baptist Church distribution site has changed its hours of operation. It will now be open for victims to pick up supplies on Wednesdays from 4 PM to 7 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM to 12 noon.

To volunteer1207: I'm not sure exactly what they are still requesting but you can call the emergency management office in Snow Hill at 252-747-2544 and they will direct to the right person/place. All the shelters are closed but I'm sure they could still use any help they could get in donation centers or debris removal. Thanks for helping our community in our time of need!!

INMATES: I believe if you offer to just feed inmates, the correctional institute will assist with all the help you want? It worked well in Greene County, I was there and those guys did an outstanding job! POPPA

Just completed volunteer form for Bertie Co, does anyone know if Greene Co needs volunteers? Haven't seen anything postings or signs up around Snow Hill. I live in Wayne, 15 minutes from Snow Hill but will go whereever the need is.

How about using inmate labor? It's free and believe me it won't hurt them to do an honest days work.

Can't find the original article from right after the storm, but I think the inmates that helped then actually got paid something cheap for the work. Still we should use them if we can afford it.
