Volunteer Firefighter Accused Of Port-A-Potty Fires

A volunteer firefighter is one of two people accused of setting fires to several port-a-potties outside of Fayetteville, including one that damaged a church.

Edward Williams of Stedman was charged with multiple counts of burning personal property and burning of a church. Deputies say he is a volunteer firefighter with the Stedman Fire Department.

Also charged was 20-year-old Harold Starling, Jr.

Cumberland County deputies say the two were arrested last night after detectives saw them approaching another port-a-potty with diesel fuel, cardboard and lighters. Deputies say Williams admitted they were responsible for the fires.

The most recent fire was set early Tuesday morning at Faith Builders Christian Center. It melted the vinyl siding at one end of the church.

The two men are being held on $12,000 bonds.
