A veteran Rocky Mount police officer has been named interim police chief.
Captain Jim Thomas will take command of the department Friday, following the retirement of Chief John Manley.
Thomas began as a police officer in 1981 and has worked in all four of the department's divisions. Most recently he was commander of the Staff Services Division.
Manley will retire Thursday after 32 years in law enforcement. He was named police chief in December 2004.
City Manager Charles Penny says he is currently reviewing candidates for the city's next police chief.
