Unemployment Drops In 73 North Carolina Counties

An Eastern Carolina county has the state's lowest unemployment rate for April. That according to new county figures released today.

Currituck County's unemployment rate was 5.6% for April. The Employment Security Commission says 73 counties saw unemployment rates drop in April, while just 10 saw increases and another 17 remained unchanged.

Several coastal counties here in the East saw significant drops in the jobless figures. In Dare County unemployment went down 4.7%, while in Hyde the rate dropped 2.5% from March. On the other end, Wilson County experienced a .6% jump in unemployment.

The county with the highest unemployment in April was Scotland County at 15.8%.

Do you folks understand this is based on random sampling of NC citizens, not unemployment offices? This is not a figure based on the number of people collecting unemployment.

Obama is showing off! He catches Bin Laden and now he is really helping NC! Obama 2012!
  • by Disability? on May 27, 2011 at 02:26 PM
Does this mean a large % of people in NC just qualified for Disability?

You have stagnant job and housing numbers continuing in the US due to poor dem policies but the people in North Carolina FINALLY woke up and put Republicans in charge. As a result we are seeing our unemployment numbers drop. They have dropped every month since the Republicans took over the Legislature. Thank God for Republicans!!!

I can't wait for all the nc school employees to flood the unemployment office in July. So it is better to pay all these people an unemployment check, for doing nothing, than it is to keep them employed, tax their income, and have them purchase goods and services. The state is going to pay either way. How is that good "conservative" economics. My days of voting republican are over.

It didnt really drop, the ones who are no longer eligible for unemployment and those that just completely gave up looking for a job do are not counted to the unemployment numbers. By the way it is Obamas fault, his healthcare bill has a lot to do with people not hiring. CAIN 2012.

Unemployment surveys are not based on the numbers of people applying for unemployment. That is absolutely false. A statistically significant sample of people are surveyed at random, with a low computed margin of error, on a monthly basis. I wish I knew who started the rumor that labor statistics were based on numbers of people applying for services- that is a ridiculous rumor, very attractive to concrete thinkers.

Same thing was said with the Census workers were hired. The Unemployment calculation formula did not change after President Obama took office. Seasonal workers, census workers, holiday seasons, people giving up looking, are all calculated into the formula.

To Nice Try...Where are all the jobs the Republicans promised back in November? I have not heard them say anything about job creation since then, only about eliminating the ones the middle class have now. If the Repugs would actually do something to help the economy, maybe you could get off the food stamps.

YOU said gas prices would be $5.00 gal before Memorial day. I know it just breaks your heart the prices are slowly starting to come down. FYI, Speculators are the ones who caused the increase in fuel prices, if you would pull that stupid Tinfoil hat off long enough you will know this.

Wasn't the United States drilling in 2007 while the gas prices were at $5.00 per gal? If it did not help then, what good would have it have done now? There is NO OIL SHORTAGE, The moratorium on drilling would not have had an effect on gas prices now. You have a one track mind, or are you just bat sh#@ crazy?
