U.S. Fish & Wildlife Truck, Cargo Trailer Stolen

The feds are seeking the public's help in finding out who stole a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service pickup truck and cargo trailer over the weekend outside of Belhaven.

It happened Friday night or Saturday morning at the shop at the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, that's on Refuge Road in Hyde County.

A news release says the thief or thieves came in through the back gate of the maintenance yard and broke into the main office. Once inside they took the keys and credit card for the 2006 white Ford pickup truck and a 20-foot fully enclosed white cargo trailer.

The trailer was loaded up with four-wheelers, marine radar equipment and power tools. The F150 Ford has FWS logos on both front doors and "Fire Management" written in red on the tailgate. The 2001 Continental cargo trailer also has "Fire Management" written in red on its back doors.

"It's possible the truck and trailer are still in the area, so we need folks to call us if they see them - or even if they think they see them. Or, it's possible the truck and the thief are long gone. If you know of someone who left town over the week-end, we'd appreciate that information," said refuge manager Howard Phillips. "Of course, by now they have likely removed the decals and possibly even painted the truck and trailer."

Those with any information should call Law Enforcement Officer Frank Simms at 252-216-7504 or Refuge Manager Howard Phillips at 252-796-7517.
