US 17 Bypass Extension Project Underway

The US 17 bypass extension project is in its early stages of construction. Contractors are installing ditches, a silt fence, and a safety fence among other things. NC DOT officials say they have completed 7 -10% of the project. Drivers say the wait at the intersection of Western and North Marine Boulevard can be frustrating.

"Its chaotic. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times before you can get through the light. You just never know," said local driver Dorothy Swanson.

Hopes are the Western Parkway project will help with that. Officials say it should be completed around September of 2013.

Relax and slow down. Everything is under control as long as you don't get in a hurry.
