UNC's Levi Michael Drafted 30th Overall

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior shortstop Levi Michael became the sixth Tar Heel selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday night when the Minnesota Twins selected him No. 30 overall. Michael becomes the sixth Tar Heel selected in the first round since 2006.

Michael owns a .297 average on the year with 52 runs scored, 48 RBI and a team-high 47 walks on the season. The Welcome, N.C., native has committed just eight errors at his third position in three years after playing at second base as a freshman and at third base as a sophomore.

"It's an exciting experience for me and my family," Michael said. "It feels good to be drafted and I would like to thank all the coaching staff and training staff here at Carolina for all their help, I couldn't have done it without them. It is good to see that all my hard work has paid off."

Michael joins Matt Harvey (2010 - 7th overall, New York Mets), Dustin Ackley (2009 - 2nd overall, Seattle Mariners), Alex White (2009 - 15th overall, Cleveland Indians), Andrew Miller (2006 - 6th overall, Detroit Tigers) and Daniel Bard (2006 - 28th overall, Boston Red Sox) as Tar Heels drafted in the first round since 2006. The six selections are more than any other school in country.

Michael was not drafted coming out of high school as he graduated a semester early and joined the Tar Heels for the 2009 College World Series season. UNC has now produced 13 first round picks in school history and Michael becomes the first Tar Heel ever to be selected by the Twins.

The junior shortstop and the rest of the Tar Heels will take to the field this weekend when they take on Stanford in the NCAA Super Regional round with a trip to Omaha on the line. Michael will be looking to make his second NCAA College World Series appearance as a Tar Heel. The NCAA Super Regional schedule and host sites will be announced late Monday night.

I wonder why nobody from ECU got drafted in the first round, could it be because EZU doesn't have any good players????

There is no need to go there again today. ECU had a good year and has a good program. A lot of schools wish they had made it to the NCAA tourney

People like you are an embarrassment to the UNC fan base. No wonder why so many people hate UNC cause of ignorant people like you. I certainly wish you would pull for Duke from now on. ECU got to the round of 32 where as you have 292 schools with D1 baseball programs. ECU and UNC both got in the top 11% whereas UNC is in the top 5.5%.
