Highway 43 Reopens After Two Vehicle Crash

A head-on crash involving two sport utility vehicles closed down Highway 43, south of Greenville, for part of Friday morning.

The Highway Patrol says the accident happened around 10:15 near Page Road, that's just south of D.H. Conley High School.

Troopers say a white Ford Explorer was heading north on Highway 43 when it crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Ford Excursion. The Excursion went into a ditch, hit a utility pole and landed on its top. That pole snapped and caused power lines to fall.

The Highway Patrol says both drivers were taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and they believe those injuries not to be serious. Right now there is no word on any charges.

The highway has since reopened.

People need to wake up and stop acting so selfish. Stop texting or looking everywhere but at the road before you take someone elses life or your own. It seems to me that since they made the no texting while driving law, people seem to be more determined to do it.

43 needs to be 4 lanes. I travel that highway a lot and worry constantly....it is too heavily traveled to be only a 2 lane road!

This is the second accident in that immediate area in less than 24 hours. Yesterday during the 5:00 rush, there was an accident at the Conley stoplight; traffic was backed up in all directions;the Eastern Pines Fire/Rescue guys were directing traffic. Didn't see anything about this accident on the news or internet. Do hope everybody involved with both situations are/will be okay.

Thank you for your concern Nana. No the man in red vehicle is not alright. He has a bruised lung his brain is swollen and bruised, his ear was badly cut he has many bruises and cuts and is in a lot of pain. He cannot remember accident or stay in hospital. We can only hope and pray he will have a full recovery. What id like to know is what man in white vehicle was doing that caused him to come into my SONS. lane and almost killed him. I would also like to know why he has not been charged with reckless driving. He is still a danger to. other unfortunate people.

I had to take evasive action last week on Hwy 43 very close to this same spot. The driver of a White Ford Explorer was obviously texting and crossed the center line, totally oblivious that I had to swerve to avoid being hit head on. Hopefully all involved in the incident are ok.

Me too! Exact same spot, at 5:00 last night. Then I came upon the accident at the light and really felt warned. I work right there on 43 and the way people drive on that road scares the heck out of me. There are too many houses, businesses, and roads that people turn off to and too many people passing to be distracted. Dangerous.

Maybe it was the same White Ford Explorer...but this time it didn't miss the other car...I do hope everyone is O.K.
