Two Students Struck By Car Near School

Two students from Jacksonville's White Oak High School were hit by a car on their walk home from school.

The accident happened near the school, according to the Jacksonville Daily News. The paper says Kayla Fields and Erica Lindsay suffered minor scrapes after a car hit them on Piney Green Rd. at Balsam Rd. Both girls fell into a ditch, and one broke her arm.

Lawmen told the paper the girls tried to cross the road at the last minute, and the driver was not at fault.

It's not just college kids either. I see plenty of adults blatantly walk right out into traffic. In California pedestrians definitely do have the legal right of way, and often the driver will be found at fault even if the pedestrian was in the wrong (when there is a collision). I've lived there most of my life, and even I find that ridiculous. You can't leap in front of a car and expect them to slam on their brakes for you. If you do, then you got what you deserved. I knew that when I was FIVE. Anyone older certainly should know better.

My husband works for a fire department. In the last few days they have had a handful of class for pedestrians being hit by a vehicle. Everyone just needs to be cautious.

Plenty of college kids and adults around here don't either. How many times have you heard someone say, "Well, pedestrians have the right of way" while leaving out the parts about at a crosswalk, etc.

How bout worry about the drivers that can't properly slow down in a school zone. How do you miss two people walking across the street? Oh cell phone or texting perhaps....Or the driver can't seem to function behind the wheel properly.

Guess the same way a driver would not see a child running out from between parked cars. It says the children trying to cross at the last minute, they walked out in front of the car. Don't blame all drivers just because you do those things.
