Two Airlifted To Vidant After Carteret County Crash

Two people were airlifted to the hospital after an accident that also turned out the lights for customers in the east.

First Sgt. Al Morse with the Highway Patrol says 24-year old Marlana Hirsh and her passenger, 25-year-old Steven Marsh were traveling 75 mile per hour on McCabe road, near Newport, just after four this morning. Troopers say Hirsh ran off the road to the right, hit a utility pole and snapped it in two, before hitting a ditch and flipping over in it.

Another driver saw the PT cruiser upside down in the ditch and called for help. Troopers say Hirsh and Marsh were airlifted to Vidant Medical Center, where at last check Hirsh was in critical condition and Marsh in serious.

Troopers say alcohol and speed are being considered as a cause of the wreck.

Progress Energy customers living west of Newport in the Brandywine community were without power until about 10 this morning.
