Police are investigating gunfire that hit two parked vehicles in one normally quiet Pitt County town late last night.
Ayden Chief Barry Stanley says gunfire erupted around 11:20 p.m. and the two vehicles struck were parked across from each other on Lee Street. The chief says officers heard between nine and twelve shots and they believe people running down the street were shooting at each other.
Two bullets struck a man's new pickup truck--one hitting the driver's side while the other broke out both side windows. The owner told us he heard the shots, but at first didn't believe it was gunfire. The man's daughter and grandson were inside, and he says they're lucky none of the bullets hit his house.
Chief Stanley says the gunfire is very concerning to them because this doesn't happen very often in Ayden. While police are checking up on several leads, he is asking people who may have seen anything to come forward.
