Lawmen are making changes at the New Bern police department after a suspect escapes while being booked.
Brian Webb was arrested for allegedly stealing a car. But before police could move him to jail, he got away and was later arrested in Jacksonville before he could board a bus out of town.
Webb's escape is the third from the New Bern facility in the past three years. Chief frank Palombo says it's time for a change.
Chief Palombo says his officers need to always be on guard, even after they catch their suspect. He says they may change the physical layout of the booking room, so the officers never have to turn their backs on suspects when processing them.
Chief Palombo says the door is locked from the inside, but state code requires a release button for people to get out. He says they'll need to do a better job securing suspects in the booking area so they never have a chance to even reach the door.
