The Race Is On: Date Set For Washington County Sheriff Election

The date is set for Washington County voters to return to the polls to vote for sheriff.

State and county election officials agreed to hold a new election on May 24th. The State Board of Elections ordered a new election after a close and controversial race in November.

Now voters have another chance to have their say on whether they want incumbent Democrat James Ross or Republican challenger Greg Hassell to lead law enforcement in the county.

People on this blog are always talking about Greg Hassell and, "the negative things that he has done in the past." Will someone please be specific and tell the rest of us exactly what he has done that is so bad? Are Hassell's deeds worse than the things Sheriff Ross and his supporters did in the past election? Please tell us what you are talking about. We have been hearing for a long time that the truth will come out, but I haven't heard anything yet. Please tell us what you are talking about; give us facts. Without facts, your comments are just opinion and bravado.

I do not say much, I just sit back, watch and listen to what people have to say. It amazes me that Greg Hassell is still trying to become sheriff. If all of the negative things that he has done in the past, why would he still want to become sheriff. The truth about him will come out real soon. And Ross has a lot of changing to do if he wants to stay in office. There is some redirecting on his part that needs to be addressed. With Greg hassell wanting to hang people, what are we supposed to think about him? Who would I vote for, it won't be Greg Hassell!!!

i wonder what motive you have for keeping ross. and yes we need to get the sheriff thing over with gregg should have made it the first time he ran and this county issue would have been over. he cares about the county hes worked in I KNOW since 1975 as a lawinforcemen officer abd beleive me if you stay in it that long you are highly experinced and need to be sheriff. Look at ross experience what 5 yrs as a deputy. ask ross to open court as baliff, ask him to serve a writ lol hes a joke as a sheriff and we need this change bad. you might not like gregg because he will do his job and do ot well but he will do it . I truly hope this time gregg makes sheriff ill be there for him and i ask this county for the same respect this county deserves so we can become a county again and a county in other peoples eyes . maybe just maybe we will get more people coming to plymouth to stay and we can be proud of our sheriff and county including our deputy's. please go out and vote with pride and honesty for the county's sake if nothing else. ive kmown gregg since i got out of the army in 1975 and worked with him hes the right man ive also worked with the other one ross beleive GREGGS THE MAN TO HAVE

Someone made a comment about the Hospital, Well don't forget the School Board. That is a joke if i have ever seen one. Our county officals are worried about offending someone. If better education was the #1 issue, I have had all that I can stand. If you are not part of the SOLUTION, then you are part of the problem. Let's take one problem at a time. Elect Greg Hassell and you will see a difference in Washington Couny's drug trafficing. Now get out and vote and don't complain.

To (Deputy Police K.S.)Anonymous @ 1:07am. You must be worried about your or your friends job if you're posting on WITN at one o'clock in the morning. You got some things wrong in your comment though. Greg Hassell has already started the CLEAN UP! He proved to Raleigh the county is full of crooks. He got a new election and when he wins for the second time (he actually won in November if you take away the dead voters)he will get law enforcement on the right track. He does not have a hidden motive, he has said all along all he wants is for law enforcement administrators (the sheriff) to do their job and for the deputies to treat all the people equal and stop acting like they (the deputies) are better than everyone else. It's not that he wants the sheriff job so badly as you claim.. He just wants the sheriff or any sheriff to do their job. You admit Ross needs improving, HE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, he has had 4 years to improve but hasn't. Why waste any more time with him.. Elect Hassell.

Clean up should start with Greg Hassell! The truth will come out soon about him. Ross is not perfect and yes, he needs to do some improving, but the only reason Greg Hassell wants the position is to abuse power that he alway have as a supervisor with probation. Greg hassell has a hidden motive for wanting the sheriff job so badly. But we already got a pretty good idea what! GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!!!

To anonymous, i really hope you reconsider and vote again. If you do not, I hope you don't expect anyone to listen to you complain about how bad things are.
