A teen driver is facing charges after troopers say she caused a fiery crash this morning while heading to school in Carteret County.
Amanda Andersen of Newport is charged with careless and reckless driving.
The Highway Patrol says the 16-year-old was heading west on Highway 24 near Broad Creek Elementary School when she crossed the center line and struck an oncoming SUV. In an attempt to avoid that accident, troopers say another vehicle ran off the road and hit a culvert. They say Debra Windberry was able to get out before her vehicle before it caught fire. The other driver, Natalie Hammett had to be freed from her SUV.
Troopers say all three women were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Highway Patrol says Andersen turned 16 in September.
