TROOPERS: Speed Caused Teens To Crash

State troopers say speeding caused a crash that injured three high school students after an SUV overturned several times Wednesday while on their way to school.

The Highway Patrol says the single vehicle crash happened on Taylor Road, outside of Chocowinity around 7:20 a.m.

Thomas Wainwright of Chocowinity, the 16-year-old driver has been charged with exceeding the posted speed limit and a driver's license restriction violation. Two Southside High School classmates were in the SUV, and troopers say Wainwright can't have more than one person under 21 in the vehicle when driving.

Troopers say the teen was going approximately 65 miles per hour in the 55 m.p.h. zone when the vehicle went off the road to the left, came back on and then overturned several times.

The Highway Patrol says all three teens had non-life threatening injuries.
