Troopers said one man fell asleep at the wheel on his way to catch a flight early Thursday morning.
Trooper Steve Brown said at 3:37 a.m., he was called to Broad Creek Road in Craven County, near the intersection with NC 55.
Investigators said 58-year-old Michael Eurgio of Fairfield Harbor was not wearing his seat belt while driving to catch a plane.
Trp. Brown said it appears Eugio drifted off to the right just a few miles from home, flipped his car, and it struck several trees, including at least one directly on the hood of the car.
Investigators said Eurgio was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center, and would be transported to Vidant Medical Center later in the morning.
Brown said it appears the driver's leg may have been broken in the wreck and he also had a few bumps and bruises.
"It could have been a lot worse," said Trp. Brown. "It may be that because he was asleep, his body was relaxed so he did not sustain further injury."
Brown said the 58-year-old will face charges of reckless driving and not wearing his seat belt.
