The Highway Patrol said the driver who caused a head-on collision that sent two people to the hospital has been charged with DWI.
The Highway Patrol said the Highway 99 Belhaven Bridge reopened at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Highway Patrol said traffic was detoured several hours onto Seed Tick Neck Road.
Troopers told us a red pickup truck crossed the center line just south of the bridge, colliding head-on with an SUV.
The driver in the pickup truck, 35-year-old old Larry Thompson of Grimesland, was charged with DWI and crossing the center line. Troopers said he did not have alcohol in his system but was impaired by some other substance.
The driver of the SUV, 54-year-old Debbie Steadman of Belhaven, was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center with serious injuries.
