Vera Sykes has been a teacher at Pines Elementary School in the Washington County town of Plymouth for 17 years. She teaches third grade. She has a degree in Elementary Education from Elizabeth City State University. She enjoys coming to work at Pines Elementary School each day and loves teaching and says she can't imagine doing anything else. She has taught second and most recently third grade. She enjoys teaching and the challenge of getting to know a new group of students each year. Mrs. Sykes believes that all children can learn and must be held personally accountable for their learning. She feels that when provided with the right tools and the best learning environment anything is possible for her students. When all these variables come together Mrs. Sykes loves seeing the "light come on" for students and knowing that they are getting it; they understand. That is the biggest reward for not only the teacher but the students as well.
Vera got 15 nominations! One person wrote: 'She encourages the students always to try hard and always do their best.'
