It's tax day across America as many people are rushing to mail their returns before midnight, but here in Eastern Carolina you better do that long before midnight to avoid any penalties.
That's because the closest place to get something postmarked after 5:00 p.m. is in Raleigh. The U.S. Postal Service says with so many people filing electronically these days, it makes no sense for post offices to stay open late on tax day. The IRS says of 143 million returns filed last year, 77% of those were filed online.
If you still miss that 5:00 p.m. deadline and need to mail your return, the Raleigh plant is located at 1 Floretta Place, off I-540 and U.S. 70. You should have correct postage on your return, since they do not sell stamps at that location. The only other location in the state that's open late is the Charlotte processing facility which is open until 11:00 p.m.
