UPDATE: Swimming Warning Lifted For Carteret's North River

The swimming advisory in one area of Carteret County has been lifted.

State officials say the waters of the North River near the south side of the U.S. 70 bridge near Bettie now have normal levels of bacteria, meaning it is safe to swim there again.

Previous Story
The N.C. Recreational Water Quality Program says test results have come back with more bacteria than they normally see at a local swimming spot.

Officials said on Wednesday, the waters of the North River near the south side of the U.S. 70 bridge near Bettie tested at higher levels than normal for enterococci bacteria, which is often contributed to fecal matter.

The levels recorded Wednesday were more than what the Environmental Protection Agency deems safe for recreational swimming.

Further testing was done and we are awaiting those results.

The water quality program said if further testing shows elevated bacteria counts, a swimming advisory will be posted.
