A house fire is under investigation in Pitt County after going up in flames Sunday night.
Dispatchers say a house at Helen's Crossroads, which is the intersection of County Home Rd. and Emma Cannon Rd. near Ayden, caught fire Sunday night. Drivers saw the flames from the road and alerted authorities around 7 p.m.
WITN's Chris Jones went to the scene of the fire and said nearly the only thing left is the foundation, and the air still smelled of smoke hours after the blaze was extinguished.
Dispatchers said the Pitt County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
Sheriff's office spokeswoman Christy Wallace says there have been four fires in abandoned homes in that area since May. No arrests have been made in any of the cases.
