Student Now Charged With Attempted Murder In Slashing

Charges against a 15-year-old girl have been upgraded to attempted first degree murder, two days after her arrest for slashing the throat of a fellow classmate at Southern Nash High School.

Deputies say Jasmine Barnes was attacked during a class change Tuesday morning at Southern Nash High School by a classmate with a scalpel. The 16-year-old Barnes was first taken to Wilson Memorial, and then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Deputies expect her to be released from the hospital soon.

The suspect was originally charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. In addition to the attempted murder charge, the girl is also charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Deputies say a meeting was held last night at the high school in an attempt to calm the fears of parents and students.

The Sheriff's Office says additional security measures are now being taken at the school. They say additional deputies will be on campus as needed, but won't elaborate on what additional measures will be taken.
