The strong winds were too much for an 18-wheeler blown over onto its side on a major bridge in the east Thursday night, closing the bridge for hours.

A viewer shared photos with WITN of the big rig that was traveling on the Albemarle Sound Bridge between Chowan and Washington counties. Trooper D.C. Tanner with the Highway Patrol says the truck traveling with an empty trailer was at the top of the bridge when a wind gust threw it to the side of the bridge at around 7:00 Thursday evening.

The 66 year-old driver from Edenton was not injured. Troopers say the bridge was closed late Thursday night to clear the big rig.
