State January Jobless Rate Creeps Up To 9.9%

North Carolina is seeing some welcome signs of job growth but not enough to keep the state's unemployment rate from creeping upward.

The Employment Security Commission reported Thursday that the state's unemployment rate in January was 9.9 percent, up slightly from 9.8 percent in December.

That's higher than the national jobless rate, which stands at 9.0 percent.

The agency reported that some employers are beginning to hire and that 4,500 jobs were gained in January.

But those jobs weren't enough to counter a persistently sluggish job market. The number of people unemployed and looking for work rose by nearly 3,400.

The trade, transportation and utilities sector of the economy added about 11,300 jobs since December, but other industries shed positions.

Bringer. The moratorium was lifted but then another was put in place. A judge had to strike it down. Then onerous regulations were put in place that effectively keep any drilling from occurring. A 7 year ban on new drilling is still in place. The man is dead set against domestic oil. You cannot argue that. Obama, "One and Done" Count on It!

Dear Snake Oil Co, the moratorium on drilling was lifted promptly in October because new safety standards were put in place. This means the moratorium was actually shorter than the gulf oil spill itself.

Stay Off the Soap Box, Snake Oil,you really are a liar, you were against the tax breaks unless the wealthy received them, now you are switching stories. Remember, "how many of you work for a poor person?" You kept saying that repeatedly, insisting the rich got the breaks to create jobs, You even said you owned a company, and would only hire people if the tax breaks for the wealthy were renewed. What is all the gibberish you are talking about now?

While there are "welcome signs of job growth" the jobless rate creeps up. Typical AP spin. If you gain 100 and lose 110 there is no growth or sign of growth. It's a net loss stupid! Simple spin to make current administration look good. Once they quit funding NPR they'll probably start giving that money to AP so they can keep peein on us and then reporting rain storms. We are not that stupid! Obama, "One and Done" Count on it!

W hat ? on Mar 10, 2011 at 01:33 PM, what tax breaks for the wealthy? When did I promote any tax breaks to anyone? Keep up, I said continue the Bush tax cuts and were very specific. The dow just took a dive today and you libs scratch your head or something on what to do. Drill for Oil. Just say it, poof, prices will leave the specualators like last time. We will duplicate history...and Obama has done what? Signed a moritorium on drilling. So suck it up there sparky, Obama is your problem and gas prices are you people that voted for Obama. Also, don't forget, Libyia...with unrest in the middle east, you know that speculators will feed of that like the bottom feeders they are. So what is Obama saying and doing? Clinton said we need to stay out of it...yet Libya protesters want us to knock out his ground weapons and create a no fly zone. No other country can do that as we are the only country with true stealth. Would you call Hillary and tell her that? "Stepping off the soapbox"....

It's higher than that, that's just the people looking for jobs. What about all our wonderful drug dealers that stand on the corner all day.
