State Insurance Commissioner and Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin is urging North Carolina residents to protect their palace -- or their homes -- as part of the observance of National Fire Prevention Week.
Goodwin will issue his reminder Monday at Tryon Palace in New Bern to mark the week, which began Sunday and continues through Saturday. He'll join a chimney sweep company for the cleaning and inspection at the Governor's Palace and the kitchen office.
National Fire Prevention Week promotes reducing the risk of home heating fires in December, January and February. The winter months are when half of all U.S. home fires occur.
A 1798 fire destroyed the original Tryon Palace, North Carolina's first colonial state Capitol.
