A special needs student from Carteret County has won a national writing competition.
Fifth grader Alex Girolamo is one of two special needs students nationwide to receive an award for handwriting excellence.
Girolamo was presented the award Monday at his school, St. Egbert Catholic School in Morehead City.
Girolamo was born with spastic cerebral palsy and tells WITN he worked very hard on his cursive handwriting.
Alex says, "Trying to learn it and writing it everyday the first few days of school now I learned it and do it everyday."
Alex was awarded a trophy as well as a check for $1,000 to spend how he wants.
