Sleeves Up As Marine Corps Transitions To Summer Uniforms

The decision by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to allow for rolled up sleeves on certain uniforms is now in effect.

It was just a few weeks ago that General James Amos gave the green light to allow rolled sleeves when wearing desert cammies in non-combat areas

“This will take effect on 9 March when we transition to our summer warmer weather uniforms. Get the word out Marines,” said General Amos.

This is the first time Camp Lejeune Corporal Andrew Sirios will go "sleeves up" because he joined the Marine Corps about two and a half years ago right after the sleeves down-year round order. He says it took him some time to get it just right because the fold itself needs to be three inches and it should sit just about 2 inches above the crease of your elbow.

Sirois says, "You can't do it just in one morning. At least not me yet. So I ended up doing it last night, taking a little time away from the wife and prepare myself for rolling them up yesterday.'

Marines like Captain Patrick Wheatley who were in before the rule change say it's a detail unique to Marines, and it's a real morale boost to go sleeves up again. He says, 'It's a pride thing. You can tell by looking at somebody and their sleeves at how much time they actually spend in their uniform or how much pride they take in the uniform they're wearing."

Strict uniforms guidelines for the Corps previously dictated that sleeves on the uniforms commonly known as "cammies" had to be rolled down, even during warm weather and as troops were working.

General Amos wrote "I've thought about this over the past 2 and half years. I realize that it's important to you. Sleeves up clearly and visually sets us apart.”

Marines can go sleeves up for another eight months. November 2nd the sleeves down rule will go back into affect.
