Bertie County Sheriff John Holley was injured this weekend when his gun accidentally went off.
Holley tells WITN his gun fell out of his pocket and a bullet fragment went into his foot.
The sheriff says it happened Sunday when he was off duty. Holley says he was with his family filling up his vehicle at a gas station when he put his credit card in his pocket after paying gas. The sheriff says when he took his hand out the gun fell out, hit the ground and discharged. He says the bullet ricocheted off the ground and a fragment struck him.
Holley says he was treated at a hospital for the injury and released. The sheriff would not say where it happened.
