Sheriff Elks: Disturbed, But More Driven Following Death Threat Plot

Pitt County sheriff Neil Elks is speaking out about the murder and kidnapping plot where he and his family, and those in the district attorney's office, were targeted.

The sheriff said that this past week has been like preparing for a deadly hurricane. He's been at home with family getting them ready and on alert for the unthinkable, then doing the same thing at his office.

Sheriff Elks says watching one interview tape from witnesses changed his world professionally and personally. Elks says, "First thing I wanted to do was get up and throw up because I was watching it on video. I firsthand witnessed that information as it was coming in, and it just floored and shocked me as the intelligence coming in, the amount of information they had. Personal things, such as habits, things we do, um, family members, where they live- and these things were coming off the top of their heads- not on a piece of paper- firsthand knowledge."

It was knowledge of an intricate plot to kill him, his wife, family, and members of the district attorney's office- all to get Willie Whitehead out of jail, Whitehead is one of four men charged in the Hustle Mart murders from April in Farmville.

Elks recalled telling his family about the plot. "Knowing how I was going to have to go tell them how our lives had changed in the last few minutes, Um, I was really sad about that and disturbed."

Elks says the whole ordeal has only strengthened his resolve. "This has just given me another driver to keep doing the job, working harder, and although as tragic as the event could have been if followed out, it made me realize we're on the right track and we're arresting the right people, and getting these people off the street that could hurt our citizens in Pitt County."
