Funeral For Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders


Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders was laid to rest Friday a week after he died from a massive heart attack.

The 57 year old had been sheriff for 20 years.

Maj. Fane Greenfield, who is the acting sheriff, said during services,
"Not only was he our boss, but a loving friend that had a heart of gold."

Winders is survived by his wife, three daughters, and two grandchildren and extended family members.

Burial was at Wayne Memorial Park with Sheriff’s Honors provided by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, followed by Masonic Rites.

His funeral had been set for Wednesday afternoon in Mount Olive, but had to be moved because of the weather.

Funeral arrangements have been announced for Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, January 29th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Kornegay Arena at the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive.

Burial will follow in the Wayne Memorial Park with Sheriff’s Honors provided by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, followed by Masonic Rites.

Family members will greet friends on Tuesday night, January 28, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church located at 1200 West Grantham Street Goldsboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Union Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church at 1283 Union Grove Church Road, Fremont, NC 27830 OR to the Wounded Warrior Projects located at 4200 Morganton Road, Suite 300, Fayetteville, NC 28314.

Sheriff Winders body will lie in state at Shumate-Faulk on Monday, January 27, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Longtime Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders died this morning.

The 57-year-old sheriff appears to have suffered a massive heart attack at his home and died later at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Winders began his law enforcement career with Goldsboro police as a patrol officer in 1984 and became sheriff in January of 1994. He was the first Republican elected sheriff in the county's history.

Funeral arrangements are pending, according to the sheriff's office.

Governor Pat McCrory issued the following statement on the passing of Sheriff Winders:

"Ann and I are saddened to learn of the loss of Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders. Sheriff Winders was a beloved member of his community, held in high esteem and admired for his faith, values and love for his family. His service to Wayne County since 1994 made his community a better place to live, work and play. We would like to offer our support and prayers for his wife, Teresa, and their children Ashley, Carianne and Jessica."

Congressman G.K. Butterfield released this statement:

“I am saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders. Sheriff Winders nobly committed his life to law enforcement, serving Goldsboro and Wayne County for more than thirty years. My condolences are with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren during this very difficult time.”

Congressman George Holding released this statement:

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of my close and loyal friend, Sheriff Carey Winders. As the Sheriff of Wayne County for 20 years, Sheriff Winders was committed to the people of Wayne County. An honorable man with a tireless work ethic, he was admired for his commitment to making his community safe. Sheriff Winders was devoted to North Carolina, and his passing is a great loss for the law enforcement community and Wayne County. I treasured our friendship and will miss him greatly. My condolences and prayers are with his family and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.”
