The death rate of the wild horses on Shackleford Banks in Carteret County is up, while the birth rate is down, but officials say they're not worried.
The Carteret County News-Times says Cape Lookout National Seashore officials are not concerned that more horses died than were born. The number in the herd is carefully managed with birth control and adoption.
The paper says the horse population is generally managed between 110 and 130 horses. While foals are more commonly born in the spring, one was born this passed January.
