The search continues today for a Northampton County boater who disappeared after trying to save two friends in the James River near Newport News, Virginia.
The U.S. Coast Guard tells WITN News that the 42-year-old man is from Potecasi, North Carolina. The man went into the water around 4:30 p.m. Monday from a 22-foot sail boat and never resurfaced.
Authorities tell WAVY-TV that five men from North Carolina were on the boat, and the victim went into the water to help two other friends who were struggling. Those two other people made it safely back to the boat, while the victim disappeared. The boat was equipped with life preservers, but the station says none of the people in the water were wearing them.
