Identity Released On Kayaker Found Dead In Albemarle Sound

Authorities have released the name of a kayaker who was found dead in the Albemarle Sound this morning.

He is Jonathan Day of Colington.

The U.S. Coast Guard had been searching for the man who apparently fell off his kayak in the sound near Kill Devil Hills.

The initial call came in around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday night for the missing kayaker off Rhodoms Point.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Elizabeth City and a response boat from the Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station searched for the man Wednesday night.

Thursday morning a second helicopter and another boat from Oregon Inlet began their search. Also helping is a helicopter crew from Dare County, a North Carolina Marine Patrol boat, and a boat from Colington Volunteer Fire Department.

A 19-foot yellow kayak has also been recovered, along with some fishing gear.

The man's body was found by Dare County rescue teams around 11:30 a.m.
