Schools Hold Tornado Drills To Prepare Kids

As part of severe weather awareness week, some school kids in the east practiced staying safe.

The students at P.S. Jones Middle School outside Washington in Beaufort County flooded the halls during a tornado drill Wednesday. The students crouched down next to inner walls away from windows and covered their heads.

Administrators say they take these drills seriously. Tracey Nixon is the principal at P.S. Jones and says, "We've actually had a situation several years ago when this building was opened we had a tornado warning where we had to lock down the school and and the kids went into their assigned areas."

Students across the state held similar drills Wednesday.

Governor Beverly Perdue declared this week severe weather awareness week in North Carolina.
