Salvation Army Christmas Bell Ringing Gets Underway

Shoppers in the east are now hearing a familiar sound outside many of their favorite stores. Ringing bells.

The Pitt County Salvation Army kicked off its red kettle campaign with a short ceremony at Walmart in Greenville Friday morning.

Captain John Sikes says bell ringers will be outside various stores through Christmas Eve, and says money raised helps pay for Christmas food and toys, disaster assistance and other programs throughout the year.

The campaign raised $130,000 last year. Sikes says the Salvation Army is always looking for bell ringers - both paid and volunteer.

Bell ringing either has, or will, soon kick off in many other counties.

I'm SOOO TIRED of this activity. #1. I never carry cash anymore. #2. I know the people that are sent out to do it feel bad about doing it AND would rather be doing something else (esp. on cold days) #3. Grocery stores are NOT the type of place I want to be asked for a donation, esp. at Christmas. #4. it should be illegal to "pan handle" in front of stores for anything not in the public service (cops, firemen, etc)...all others should be banned.

Hey, Stupid. These people aren't panhandling in front of the stores. They are doing a public service as those donations go to feeding hungry families and assisting low-income families with utilities. Since you are the credit card king, why don't you go to fine dining establishments where they don't ring the bells and stop going grocery shopping.

I agree with stew-ped.It gets aggravating to go shopping and you have someone asking for money at every store.
