STATE AUDIT: Magistrates Tardy With Cash & Receipts

Two Bertie County magistrates have been told they may not be reappointed if they continue not turning in money and paperwork on a daily basis.

A state audit of the Bertie County Clerk of Court's Office showed that two of the county's three magistrates were tardy in turning over funds and receipts to the clerk. State law says those funds must be deposited daily.

The audit found two magistrates were late 25% of the time, and half of those were between four and fourteen days late.

Clerk John Tyler told the state auditor that the magistrates have been told that the Chief District Court Judge as well as the Resident Superior Court Judge will be informed of any late submissions in the future and if they continue the clerk will not recommend their reappointments as magistrates.

Where are the friends of Bertie? I thought they wanted change for the better? I guess they don't have vendetta against the court system, only the county commissioners

The court has allowed two magistrate to be late over 25% of time but "now" the judge ordered no more lateness or reappointed. I bet the books was tampered with and will reflect money shortage in which leads to embezzlement. Bertie consist of problems with high school principal, school funding, and now magistrates submitting late reciepts. I wonder what is next for Bertie County? I think it is time for the Governor to become involved in these inappropriate actions.

As a former employee of Bertie legal system if you will say. I have to agree that the governmental system there needs to be investigated, along with the Sheriffs Office. I left due to things not being done right and didn't want no part of it. The entire legal system for the county of Bertie needs a new make over... the Sheriffs Office needs it the most!

Awww, it continues...the saga of Bertie Co. Between the police in Aulander who do nothing but sit at the station and the Sheriff who shoots himself in the foot by a loaded gun in his pocket!!??!! What can you expect from the Co. officials and correction officers. The whole Co. government needs to be investigated. I mean really, what more needs to happen!?

Bertie County is really screwed up. Isn't that the County the Sheriff got shot in the foot and he said he did it himself (gambeling cover up). Don't they have a prison guard bringing phones and dope into the prison. Bertie County needs to clean itself up or have the SBI come in and investigate.

The sheriff was wounded in the foot. How the heck does gambling..learn to into that action? the guard did bring phones and pot into the prison. Now...the magistrates and the guard are state employees..not county employees, so learn who works for who before pointing spouting off. BTW...SBI stands for State Bureau of Investigation.
