SEQUESTRATION: Camp Lejeune Cancels July 4th Events

You can add public July 4th activities at Camp Lejeune as another victim to sequestration cuts.

The Marine base today announced that they have decided to cancel this year's Fourth of July event for the public to minimize the impact on vital programs on the base.

"Our continued support to the operating forces, our Wounded Warriors and our families always comes first," said Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry, the Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations East - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. "I didn’t make this decision lightly as I understand how important this event is to our service members and the local community, but canceling it will allow us to use all available resources to ensure we can mitigate the fiscal challenges we are currently facing."

In the past the celebration usually brought in big name acts and was capped off with a large fireworks display which was open to the public.

Last month when Fort Bragg announced plans to eliminate its Independence Day celebration, Camp Lejeune said it had no plans to do the same.

Camp Lejeune says it plans to offer a number of free activities on July 4th for Marines, retirees and their family members.
