SCHOOL: Bus Driver Drunk With Kids On Board

Duplin County, NC -- A school bus driver has been fired after Duplin County School officials say she was drinking alcohol.

Fontella Wilson, 31 of Rose Hill was charged with DWI and driving a school bus after consuming alcohol. Wilson was driving a bus with 50 students from E.E. Smith Middle School.

The school system says Thursday morning a parent contacted them, asking why their child's bus was late. Contacted by radio, the driver told the transportation director she wasn't feeling well. The driver was told to pull over and help was being sent.

The transportation driver found the bus on the side of the road and all the children safe. He called paramedics and a substitute driver finished the route.

Hospital officials told the school system that the driver appeared to be under the influence of "an unknown substance". The school system says it immediately conducted an initial Breath-Alcohol Test and a urine screening. They say results showed the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The school system called the Highway Patrol and they arrived to conduct their own tests.

The bus ride was caught on a bus surveillance camera. The school system won't release that video, but the school superintendent has seen it and calls it "disturbing".

Parents of children on the bus were notified Thursday afternoon.

The school system says Wilson received her bus license in 2002. In 2003 she was in one bus accident. Wilson did not drive for the school system from 2007-2009 and she had been re-employed without incident since 2010.

Court officials say no court date has yet been set for the woman.

Why did this make front line? Thank God the Kids were safe and she did stop. We have bars in Kenansville opened during the day and people drink a beer or so and go back to work. We have bars that teachers and administrators frequent and then go to school tomorrow. Who was to blame when an accident happened earlier this year and there was no map of the stops for the new driver? How is a child to give a bus driver directions? It also amazed me that EMS, State Troopers, and all got awards for doing their job from Duplin County Schools. I wonder if that driver was charged with her wreck or was it put under the table. Some things need to be settled in the Board Room and not on TV. That is that woman's personal business and the news media should not have been over her house. This stinks.

Its amazing to me how the article made it look like this was one incident. Several parents have been complaining about this bus driver for the entire school year. It is by the grace of God that these children were not injured or even killed by an adults recklessness. I was truely shocked also by the number of people that said they would drink too if they had to drive someone elses children around. It makes we wander what kind of world we are living in these days. How can people have such disregard for others lives?

I can't understand why in the world this bus driver didn't call in sick. It's not that hard to get a sub. This was a really big mistake to make with peoples children's lives at stake. I know that I would be very upset if my child had been on this school bus. Hopefully this lady will seek guidence and help.

I have lived in this area for about 15 years but settled in Duplin due, in large part, to the amazing people that live there. Fontella screwed up and should pay the price. She is not the norm. Now, don't be shocked when Al Sharpton and the NAACP idiots come to her rescue.

To those that say they'd have to drink also should be ashamed. Just suppose your child was on that bus and she had a accident. You'd be at the school ready to bite the admin staff's head off. Anyone caught drinking and driving should be severely punished especially when children are involved.

What's NOT happening in Duplin Co.? Drunk Bus Driver, Student and teacher bullying, falsifying of documents by adminstration. For years this county has been sweeping so much under the rug and now it's due season. I vote the state comes in and conduct its own investigation. I wouldn't be shocked as to what else will soon enough be revealed.
