Rocky Mount Swears In New Police Chief

With eleven homicides last year - six still unsolved - Rocky Mount swore in a new police chief Tuesday morning following the retirement of the previous chief.

James Moore is now chief of police in Rocky Mount. He comes to the city from Wilmington, where he began as an officer in 1988 and worked his way up to deputy chief of police.

Moore says he doesn't sugar coat things and plans to be an energetic leader who challenges people to perform at their best. He says he plans to spend the first few weeks assessing the department's projects, initiatives, and style of policing and then he'll tweak things and incorporate new policies. Moore says he plans to crack down on crime through pro-active policing and says, "
"It's just synergizing the officers and the community to work together to try to reduce some of the crime - the crime issues in the city."

While Moore hopes to reduce crime, he isn't setting a specific crime-reduction percentage goal. He says instead of getting caught up in numbers, he wants to focus on the overall perception of safety in the city.

I would have like to seen the other applicants he was chosen over. Rocky Mount is certainly not a dream job. He might have shown more wisdom staying put as the number two guy in Wilmington. There is a big diference between police chief and deputy chief when you have 11 homicides and so many still unsolved. Wow

I wasn't too impressed with him in the 80's when I worked with him, not too sure how he made it as far as he did, since then. But Rocky Mount is a hole anyway. maybe it's a good fit.
