Richlands Elementary School in Onslow County is making a comeback from Hurricane Irene. Hurricane Irene damaged the cafeteria, the auditorium, and eight classrooms that are right above the cafeteria so badly they were not usable. Now ceiling tiles and carpet have been installed. The cafeteria is up and running again after operating in a hallway for weeks. Things are much closer to normal than earlier this month.
"After three weeks of turkey sandwiches everyday they are loving having some catfish today and pork tacos. So yeah, they're very happy. We're very happy," said Cafeteria Manager Sherry Gibson.
While the auditorium and cafeteria are up and running, there's still no projected date on when the eight classrooms will be back open. As part of the repairs to the auditorium, contractors installed carpet tiles for an easier fix if there's any more storm damage in the future.
